Dr. Joseph A. Bernstein DVM, DACVD

Dr. Joseph A. Bernstein is a native of Maryland and received his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA in 1997. He received his degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. He completed an internship in companion animal medicine and surgery at Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital followed by a three year residency in dermatology at Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine. With an interest in cutaneous oncology, he instituted the first veterinary program for Mohs micrographic surgery for the removal of locally invasive skin cancers. His other research lay in the field of non-human primate dermatology. He became a board certified diplomate of the American College of Dermatology (ACVD) in 2006 and has established his private practice in Baltimore County, Maryland. Dr Bernstein continues to publish research and is also a national dermatology and dermatopathology consultant for Antech Diagnostic Laboratory. In addition to managing small animal and equine cases in private practice, Dr. Bernstein acts as a consultant for zoos and research centers for the benefit of exotic animals and nonhuman primates. He is the founder of VetDermPath Atlas, the first comprehensive online digital atlas for the instruction of veterinary dermatopathology. He is married to his partner, dermatologist Dr. Deirdre Vaughan and is the proud father of 4 beautiful children with another one on the way!

Dr. Deirdre Vaughan is originally from Alabama, where she grew up around her grandparents’ farm and developed her life-long interest in animals. She attended Auburn University in Auburn, AL and received her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science in 1995. After receiving her undergraduate degree, she attended graduate school at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX and received her Master of Science degree in Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology. Following graduate school, Dr. Vaughan returned to Alabama for veterinary school and received her DVM from the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2004. Upon graduation, Dr. Vaughan completed a year-long internship in Small Animal Surgery and Medicine at Southeast Veterinary Specialists in Metairie, LA. Already planning on pursuing her interest in dermatology, Dr. Vaughan remained at the same location and completed a one year dermatology internship. In 2008, she successfully completed a two year residency in dermatology at Louisiana State University and joined the staff of Long Green Animal Dermatology. Dr. Vaughan is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology, serves as a peer reviewer for several veterinary journals, and is a national dermatology consultant with Antech Diagnostics. Dr. Vaughan is an avid Auburn Tiger fan and travels to as many football games as work will allow. She and Dr. Bernstein are married and are proud parents to two girls and two boys.

Angela is a registered veterinary technician and has been working with animals since 2002. She started at Long Green Animal Dermatology in 2009 and is our office manager. She is also the teacher of the veterinary assistant program at Essex Community College.

Jennifer Norman
Veterinary Technician Jen entered veterinary medicine in 2003 as an intern assistant at a general practice here in her home state of Maryland. She joined our team in January of 2018, quickly developed a keen interest in all things derm and feels fortunate to work with the smart and caring veterinary professionals of LGADC. Jen has a passion for learning, and is always eager to see what a new day in dermatology may bring. |
Desiree Blevins
Veterinary Technician Desiree has been in Vetmed for over 15 years including shelter med, GP, and Urgent care. Her love for animals blossomed from a very young age. She currently works with several different rescues fostering neonates and the occasional puppy. Desiree went to school for canine behavior and training as well as feline behavior and retention, and is also pursuing her RVT. Desiree started here with us in May 2023 and is loving the Dermatology life. |
